Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Artist of the Beautiful is quite an old short story, but its point is still pertinent. The act of chasing the etherial, elusive act of being a creator and the subsequent burnout at the end of a journey is something that will never end. I tried to convey the ethereality of Owen Warland’s journey with his mechanical automatons while he dealt with the harshness of reality.
